In many societies, girls are still the victims of massive discrimination and human rights violations – purely and simply because of their sex. Even where, on paper, education is available to boys and girls in equal measure, girls break off their school education far earlier. They are denied their basic right to education and many are married off very young.
In many of the projects funded by Jugend Eine Welt the promotion of women and girls in specific areas is a core element. Education and training are primary objectives of Don Bosco projects so that disadvantaged girls can escape from poverty and discrimination. These aims are pursued alongside other forms of support such as self-help groups for women or the distribution of microloans that enable young women to start their own small businesses.
